Movie Review: Mothman

Synopsis: A group of friends band together to hide the truth about a mutual friend's tragic death. During a reunion 10 years later, they discover that an evil entity is in pursuit of them; the legendary Mothman.

Not to be confused with the Richard Gere film "The Mothman Prophecies" from back in 2002, this is based on the same legend. Well, loosely based on the same legend I guess. Whereas I found that movie sort of interesting with a nice dark tone and creepy moments, this one is marred by a stupid script, silly special effects and just downright goofiness all around.

Somehow, this Mothman is supposed to be only punishing those who have done wrong I guess. It's sort of like "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with the dude who knows what you did only appearing in reflections. Well, that's how they start seeing him. Eventually it seems as if the rules were sort of throw out and it was just your basic SyFy channel monster movie. The classic old, cliched, creepy man who knows whats going on and hands out warnings even tells our heroine that her being back in the town has caused the trouble, but she stays anyway. Somehow hoping a gun will kill a supernatural monster I think. One character is carried away by the Mothman but reappears later. Unhurt. No explanation.

Honestly, I thought the acting was pretty good at least. And the movie is consistent. I mean the opening sequence that sets up the film is moronic, but so is the ending... so hey it's got that bookend of stupidity going for it.

But overall, this is lame even for the SyFy Network.
