Movie Review: Black Death

Synopsis: Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a young monk joins a group tasked with learning the truth about reports of people being brought back to life in a small village by a rumored necromancer.

Not just another gory sword fight flick, although those things are true, but what I think sets it apart a bit is the very nice atmosphere of creepy marshes filled with fog and mists. The movie just feels bleak and gritty with great sets and the overall feel of it. This is how I think it should feel and look at the outset of the bubonic plague. I wanted to shower after watching it. With lots of soap. Bacterial soap.

The effects are great and feel very raw too. There are quite a few hackings with big swords and such and scenes filled with blood and dismemberment.

I expected all these things though, but what I didn't expect was the excellent exploration of religious faith, occultism and witch hunts. There's quite a bit of thought-provoking material to keep the brain exercising while the eyes take in the action.

Negatives? A bit of that shaky cam stuff during some action scenes gets annoying. Also the pace and plot sort of drag along at times.

Overall though, a nice, sometimes brutal, period piece that's pretty engaging for the most part. Even the ending is pretty satisfying and a bit of a surprise I thought.

According to Sea and Be Scene, a mini-series based on Stephen King’s award-winning novel Bag of Bones will begin shooting in Nova Scotia July 6th, 2011, continuing through to August 31st, 2011.The 'haunted vacation house' novel will be directed by Mick Garris, the writer/director on three previous Stephen King TV films including The Shining, The Stand and Desperation. Pre-poduction started today in the province. Thanks to DC reader J. Swinimer.

Book Synopsis:

Several years after his wife's death, novelist Mike Noonan still suffers writer's block. A dream inspires him to return to the couple's summer retreat in western Maine, a lakeside house called Sara Laughs. Tribute To Armed Forces

I've got the steaks, corn-on-the-cob, beer and the grill is ready to go. Don't forget that today is about much more than that though. In fact it's more about why we have the freedom to do that. Book Review: Snow

Snow
by Ronald Malfi

Synopsis: When a group of travelers have their flight canceled due to bad weather, they rent a car and begin a treacherous journey home. They find themselves stranded in a seemingly deserted town. However, there's something alive in the snow... and it's hungry.

This is the first novel I've read from Malfi and if it's a good indication of his style I'll be looking for more of his work. He's got a very nice narrative style that flows with good descriptiveness. It reminded me a bit of the work of Dean Koontz or Richard Laymon the way it takes off right from the beginning and never lets up. There's some character development, but it's squeezed in between lots of action. Most of the main characters feel very human and are nicely crafted.

The story itself has a bit of the same-old-same-old, as in a small isolated town, cut off by a blizzard, being overtaken by something sinister etc and so forth, but the inventive twist of the way snow comes in to play is cool and unique. It's pretty creative really and never really explained exactly what the hell is going on, although the characters have their own theories. The atmosphere becomes pretty suspenseful and creepy and there's plenty of horror and gore to go around.

If you like the way Stephen King draws his characters combined with John Carpenter's The Thing and possibly even some Lovecraftian horror at the breakneck pace of Richard Laymon... check this out.

Slow Southern Steel To Premiere in Little Rock

This looks pretty cool. Little Rock band Rwake's vocalist CT will premiere his documentary "Slow Southern Steel" next weekend at the Little Rock Film Festival. This will be the worldwide premiere of the film that has been three years in the making with additional screening dates to be announced soon.

CT directed the film along with David Lipke and will be on hand for the film's premiere on Saturday, June 4 at 6:50 p.m. at the Riverdale Cinema #1 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Following the premiere, there will be a "Slow Southern Steel" after-party at the Rev Room with Seahag, Hour of 13, Musichatesyou and more.

"Slow Southern Steel" is an in-depth look at underground, touring bands from south of the Mason Dixon, featuring live performances, exclusive interviews, and a look into the venues and vans these bands call home. Bands featured include Eyehategod, Sourvein, Hank III, Weedeater, Black Tusk and many more.

Movie Review: I Saw The Devil

Synopsis: When his pregnant fiancee becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, a secret agent blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge in South Korea.

Wow, talk about a movie that makes you uncomfortable, that is if you squirm at obscene levels of violence of course. This film is incredibly gory and violent, almost to the point of being over-the-top. It's not a horror film per say but a very visceral revenge-thriller. Trust me though if you like horror films, you'll probably like it.

Basically one man is trying to get revenge on a ruthless serial killer who killed his wife. But he doesn't just wipe the guy out, he inflicts punishment on him and lets him go, only to track him down and do it again. Finally the serial killer begins to get revenge on the guy getting revenge on him. Along the way plenty of people are caught in the crossfire and there's a big, bloody body count. There's a lot of action and fights scenes that include knives, screwdrivers, scythes and whatever else the psychos can get their hands on.

So if this all sounds like mindless, predictable violence.... well you're not far from the truth. And again, I can't stress this enough, this is not for the squeamish. I found it very entertaining and captivating once the plot gets set into action though.

We Are The Fallen Live DVD

Just when I'd sort of forgiven We Are The Fallen for not playing the night we had tickets to see them in New Orleans with Apocalyptica earlier this year, this live video sort of angers me again that we missed them. Here they perform "I Am Only One" at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, CA on January 22, 2011, apparently for an upcoming "Cirque Des Damnes" live DVD/BluRay. I guess I'll have to settle for that.

Movie Review: Let Me In

Synopsis: A bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.

As a huge fan of the original version of this movie, Let The Right One In (reviewed here), I was pretty skeptical about even seeing this. Oh I don't mind remakes really, it's just that I didn't expect it to be very good. I was wrong. It's not as good as the original in my opinion, but judging it on it's own merit it's a damn fine horror movie.

It's a captivating film that's really more of atmospheric, creepy love story between 2 children (well, 1 child and 1 child-like vampire) than it is an all-out horror film. Oh there's horror and gore, but the majority of the film is subtle and creepy. This style may be boring to some, but I found it very well done and it really lets the characters build.

The majority of the screen time is between the 2 children and both parts are cast and played fantastically. I had sympathy for both. Chloe Moretz is so good it's creepy. Now with this film and Kick-Ass to her credit, she's quickly become one of my favorite young actresses.

But what I love most about it is that it keeps a lot of the vampire mythology without shoving it down your throat or making it all corny like say the Twilight films. The word vampire is only used once, and the subject isn't treated with sparkles and high school drama. It's a being with deep thoughts and in a lot of pain. It's not done in a real romantic sense either but throats are ripped out and blood is sprayed. Apparently being a vampire isn't as much about making it to class on time but about survival. Who knew?

Haunting, poetic, smart and powerful like the original, it's actually an excellent remake for a change.

We've known for a while that Steven Spielberg and Stephen King were joining forces to develop a limited TV series based on King's supernatural thriller Under the Dome, and now that the project has found a writer, it looks like things should be heating up shortly.

According to a story in Variety focusing on Spielberg's ever-increasing presence on projects heading to the small screen, 'The River' writer Michael Green is [currently] at work adapting the Stephen King tome Under the Dome in preparation for DreamWorks TV to shop to broadcast and cable buyers in a few months.

R.I.P. Randy Savage

Everybody is talking about Randy "Macho Man" Savage passing away yesterday, so since he was actually a big part of my life as a wrestling fan in the 80s I figured I should throw out some words on the legend.

You see I grew up watching Memphis wrestling. About the time I was graduating high school in 1984 Randy Savage was there cutting his teeth in Memphis and the surrounding area. He feuded with local icon Jerry "The King" Lawler over the AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship and teamed with "Leapin" Lanny Poffo to battle The Rock 'n' Roll Express. I can remember Randy "injuring" Ricky Morton by piledriving him through the timekeeper's table and him later turning "good guy" and teaming Lawler against Jimmy Hart's First Family stable. Obviously, as seems to always happen in rasslin', he eventually turned on Lawler and resumed the awesome feud with him over for title belt, leading to an eventual Loser Leaves Town match (what else?). Of course there was the huge WWF run and the Hulk Hogan days and all, but I'll never forget all the fun on Saturday mornings on Memphis wrestling. R.I.P. Randy.

Foos In Little Rock

Well, I finally got to see the Foo Fighters in concert and it was well worth the wait. They don't make regular stops in Little Rock and in fact I couldn't tell you the last time they played here, but dragging along Biffy Clyro and Motorhead they did just that last night at Verizon Arena, and we were in the front row of the risers to see the spectacle and arena show goodness that is Dave Grohl and company.

Biffy Clyro opened the triple-bill but we skipped their set and got our beers full and bladders empty while checking out the merch table and such. Nothing against the band, but I'm really not a fan and I'd heard the Foos play a near 2 1/2 hour long set, so we figured that was plenty of rock for an evening really.

But there was no way I was going to miss Motorhead. All these years and I'd never seen them live, despite once meeting and sharing some beers with frontman Lenny Kilmister at The Rainbow in Hollywood. The band is legendary and you know what you're going to get from them every show. They blasted through (quite loudly) "Ace of Spades," "Iron Fist," "Killed by Death," "Metropolis," and "Eat The Rich" plus a few others from the latest CD. All the guys in the band look like they could be tearing up a nursing home any day now really, but once they start playing I sort of got the feeling they may never really get old. Loud, solid set from a real metal god.

So then it's time for Foo Fighters and Dave screams "These are my famous last words!!" as they blast into their first song, also the first song on the new CD. In fact, 4 of the first 7 songs are from the new CD and the set was heavy on it. Here's a bit of a set rundown with notes, as far as I can remember (and read from the entries on my Blackberry)...

Whew! Hell yeah, they play a LONG set, but the thing is I can still think of some tracks I'd have liked to have heard... like "DOA," "Resolve," and "Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-up Is Running)" plus others. These guys have such a catalog of songs to pick from and yet they still throw some fun covers. Lemmy did come out with them for the Probot cover, which was awesome and heavy as hell, and they do the covers by The Who, Queen and Alice Cooper. That's a rock n roll show my friend.

No big fancy stage show to speak of either, missing the huge TV screen you see usually now and just a modest light show. The star is Dave Grohl far and away. The guy is just limitless energy as he screams, bangs his head, chews his gum, shreds his guitar and runs back and forth down a catwalk that leads to a stage by the soundboard. The only time he chills out is for the songs right after the encore break that he performs solo on acoustic guitar, and actually it wasn't as much solo as him and 8,000 or so people singing back-up with him. Pretty awesome. Dave Grohl craps more rock n roll than most so called "rock stars" will see in their entire careers. The guy sneezes rock n roll riffs.

The bottom line is this... the Foo Fighters give you your hard earned money's worth. All the attitude, music and energy you could ask for in an evening from one of the best bands of the last decade plus.

Lemmy and The Foos!

In honor of me seeing Foo Fighters and Motorhead tonight here in Little Rock, I give you a classic video from Dave Grohl's side project back in 2004, Probot, for the song "Shake Your Blood" which featured Lemmy from Motorhead on vocals. It's a great track from a very often overlooked CD full of good metal tracks.

For "Shake Your Blood" Grohl recorded the guitar and drums himself, Lemmy performed bass and wrote the lyrics, which to me makes it sound just like a Motorhead track.

The video features 66 women from the SuicideGirls adult entertainment website. In the video, the band is represented with Dave Grohl on drums, Lemmy on lead vocals and bass, and doom metal legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich on guitar. My friends, this is how a metal video should be done... take notes.

The new CD from Warrant, Rockaholic, came out this week. This is the first video for the track "Lifes A Song". That's Robert Mason (formerly of Lynch Mob and Cry Of Love) on lead vocals now.

Movie Review: Centurion

Synopsis: In AD 117, a splinter group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.

If you're looking for originality or historical accuracy, this probably isn't for you. A similar tale has been told many times and I really couldn't tell you much about how accurate it is... and don't care. I can tell you it's got a lot of great action and battle sequences and is just loaded down with violence. I'd expect nothing less from writer/director Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers) and he delivers yet again and continues to be one of my favorites. The tagline is "fight or die" and that's pretty much all you need to know here.

The script and the dialog are nothing special but the acting is on par and with the awesome back drop of the Scottish mountains it feels a lot more epic that it is really. It's not on a scale like say Gladiator or Braveheart by any means and the entire budget was probably about what they spent just on food for either of those films, but it has a great feel to it and can stand with those movies on a relative scale. There's not much real character development nor a lot of chit-chat in general going on here, but oh there is bloodshed and a plethora of gory beat downs. I liked the ending as well.

It's a gritty, violent cat-and-mouse tale that happens to be set in a beautiful locale and an exciting time. It's an enjoyable action-adventure I thought. Not deep, not highly original and definitely not for the timid or queasy.
