Movie Review: God Bless Ozzy Osbourne

Synopsis: Ozzy Osbourne's four decade track record as a culturally relevant artist is unprecedented and this documentary covers it all, featuring never before seen footage uncovered from the archives and interviews with Paul McCartney, Tommy Lee and others. God Bless Ozzy Osbourne is the first documentary to take viewers inside the complex mind of rock's great icon. Emerging from a working class family in war torn England, Osbourne and his neighborhood friends formed Black Sabbath and invented heavy metal. Plagued by self doubt, Osbourne the solo superstar went on a binge that lasted 40 years. God Bless Ozzy Osbourne will relive the highs of his triumphs as well as his journey to sobriety, which Ozzy regards as his greatest accomplishment.

I love Ozzy and have been a fan since I first heard Black Sabbath's debut as an 11-year-old just discovering hard rock. This documentary really covers a lot for the average fan, but for a die hard I think everything on here has been told before and there is still a lot of stuff that wasn't even touched upon. I don't believe there was a mention of the famous Alamo-whizzing incident and although they cover Randy Rhodes time with the band they didn't even mention Brad Gillis or Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde appears on camera but there no discussion about finding him or their time together despite their long partnership. Want some Tony Iommi? Look elsewhere. Ozzfest tales? They talk about Ozzfest for about 1 minute total.

He talks about the bat-biting and dove-chomping and Randy's plane crash and him choking Sharon but again all of these stories are well known to most of the fans. I was hoping for some new revelations.

And if you're looking for insider talk on some of the songs or records, look elsewhere (or nowhere that I know of actually). There's some live concert video (mostly with Robert Trujillo, Mike Bordin and Zakk Wylde) and songs are played throughout from all eras but there's really no discussion about the writing or meanings or anything. At one point Ozzy is watching some of his old videos and talking about them, but it's brief and all he really does is bitch about them and how stupid he looks. No insight, possibly because he just doesn't remember. I wish they could have either added a good 30 minutes to this and discussed his music and musicians or just dropped some tales of smearing feces on hotel walls and such and replaced that with useful info about the songs. I get it, drugs are bad. Figured it out on my own.

What this really tells is his rise to fame and then his lifelong struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. It's pretty heartbreaking to watch his children discuss his many failings as a father in elaborate detail. He's presented as out of control, unloving and absent... or just too intoxicated to participate in their lives when he was home. This could have been a total downer, especially when mixed with stories of trying to kill Sharon etc, but he's been sober for 5 years and it's great to see him excited about stuff like getting a driver's license.

If you get the DVD, there's just a few deleted scenes but not much really. I've got the Blu-ray and honestly I'd like to have seen maybe all of his videos or more old concert footage as extras, but that's just not to be.

This is a really entertaining movie though, very well made and definitely worth watching for any fan of Ozzy or Sabbath. I just wish it was more music-centric. Perhaps though if you'd rather hear a tale of snorting ants or lapping up somebody's whiz than what's behind the song "Mama I'm Coming Home" for instance, you'll like this a lot more than me.

Movie Review: Mask Maker

Synopsis: Mask Maker (aka Maskerade) follows a young couple who purchases a 19th century plantation home and invites friends up for the weekend to celebrate. As they dig up the mystery surrounding the death of the former residents, it becomes apparent that the plantation home’s former owners have not left, and the unlucky youths suddenly find themselves running for their lives.

Obviously inspired mainly by the classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this is a slasher that owes a lot to many more slasher movies... to the point where almost every single thing about this feels derivative. There's just nothing particularly new or inventive about this at all.

The cast and the acting are all pretty decent really. To be rated R, it's pretty tame though. There's a bit of gore, but not a whole lot, and not a lot of nudity either. It could probably easily be PG-13.

Nowadays there are just so many horror remakes I was sort of excited to see a new character and story, but even though it's not a remake it nearly feels like it. The bad guy like to cut people's faces off and wear them after he drops the axe on them... and that's about it. Typical slasher scenes, typical kills, typical cardboard characters. The setting could have been a pretty cool place, an old home out in a remote Texas area (again, see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), but it's not really important or used creatively.

In the end I did enjoy a few of the actors and there is a body count that piles up, so it's not a total loss. Something else positive that I did think stood out was the dialogue between the characters actually felt real and that's sort of unusual nowadays. As a fan of this type of film I had some fun, but if you're not into these you'll want to totally pass on this.

Movie Review: Green Lanterrn

Synopsis: A test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

I really wanted to like this movie, being a big comic book geek and also a fan of Ryan Reynolds, but it's pretty hard to like. It looks really nice, with big special effects and great action sequences, but that's about as deep as it goes. In fact it looks a little over-produced really. And the story is just too simple.

I thought Reynolds did what he could with the role really, he's both funny, cocky and sympathetic at the same time. His "love interest" is Blake Lively and she's pretty easy to look at and does a nice job with her role, which was probably a bit too small really.

As the story unfolds, it's just a bit too dull for stretches with not enough action or superheroing for my liking. It's more of a sci-fi film often, which is cool, but just when I felt like it was going to get some detail it sort of dumbs itself back down. For a 2 hour film, I'd like to have seen a good 15 or 20 more minutes of GL getting his green on.

Were this made 10 years ago people probably would have flipped out for it, but as it stands it's just another in a long line of superhero flicks and we've seen most of this before... and more aptly done. Still watchable and fun at times... but lacking.

Let The Christmas Sin Begin

And so it begins... the 2011 Christmas season. I've activated all the Christmas songs on my iPod and survived Black Friday, so it's pretty much official now. I'll be shoving plenty of Christmas cheer down your throat for the next month so you might as well lay back and enjoy it. Let's start it with this one from a band I caught last year in Vegas on Fremont Street.

It's Sin City Sinners "Rockin Around The Christmas Tree", written & directed by Jason Green and created entirely on the Ipad 2.

"A Sinners Christmas" CD is available now @ Itunes & thesincitysinners.com

Sin City Sinners features Todd Kearns (Slash, Age of Electric) Brent Muscat (Faster Pussycat) Dr. Michael Ellis, & Rob Cournoyer (Raging Slab).

Sin City Sinners released their 3rd CD "A Sinners Christmas" on Nov 25th. The CD includes guest appearances by George Lynch, Ron Keel, Slim Jim Phantom (The Stray Cats) Jizzy Pearl (RATT, Love/Hate) Pete Loran (Trixter) Louie Merlino (Beggars & Thieves) Frank Dimino (Angel) & Sammy Serious (The Zeros).

A portion of the sales from "A Sinners Christmas" will be donated to the Toys for Tots Las Vegas chapter, who help to make sure less fortunate children have toys for Christmas.

Movie Review: Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)

Synopsis: When a snowstorm shuts down the airport, a business man (Steve Martin) must struggle to travel home for Thanksgiving with an obnoxious slob of a shower ring salesman (John Candy) his only companion.

I have several holiday traditions. Most importantly though is the fact that I don't begin with the Christmas music or movies until the Thanksgiving feast is consumed each year, and then it always starts with this movie. It's a movie based around traveling home for Thanksgiving but it's really more about family, friendship and just basic good will towards men.

What makes the film great is the duo of Steve Martin and the late, great John Candy. No 2 others in these roles would be anywhere near as memorable I suspect. They are wonderful and it is really a treat to watch them work together and play off each other. Steve Martin plays a smug, work-a-holic with a great life but doesn't really know how good he's got it. Candy is sort of an obnoxious oaf who you can't help but like and feel a bit sorry for, yet at the same time is just annoying as hell. Martin is the perfect straight-man to Candy's roll, and never trounces on his scenes. When Candy's role calls for him to be serious, as it does a couple of times, he really shows his greatness as an actor, something I think is often overlooked. R.I.P. John.

The film is rated R, mainly for the language, including one of the most classic comedy scenes ever where Steve Martin drop's a load of f-bombs on a car rental agent. Other classic scenes include the "pillow scene" when the guys share a bed in a hotel and a scene which involves them going the wrong way down the freeway. I watch it every year... and every year I laugh at these same scenes.

This is a heart warming film that's also very funny and I think it's John Hughes best film. You'll have tears from both laughter and touching moments by the end, and what more could you want to kick off a holiday movie season than that?

Movie Review: Conan The Barbarian

Synopsis: The tale of Conan the Cimmerian (Jason Momoa) and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.

Like violence? If so, you're in luck here. This thing makes Scarface look like a Muppet movie on violence levels. Lots of severed limbs, bludgeoned noggins, stabbings, slicings, decapitations and blood flows like the Amazon during rainy season.

Acting? Plot? Character building? NAY! Here's what you need to know. Sexy new Conan is pissed at some dude for killing his father (Hellboy!!) and wiping out his village when he was an angry, violent lad. He grows up to be a mead-swilling, chick-bagging, angry 20-something who seeks out the bad guy and beats the living crap out of everybody he can find. Roll credits!

It's barbaric, relentless and gory... pretty much just like the source material. This movie took a huge beating (pun!) from the critics but to be honest with you, it's about what I expected. The visuals and action are great and the cinematography is pretty sweet. If they'd have spent just a little time at all on the story and maybe some characters... I'd have probably loved it. As it stands... I kinda liked it and will watch it again sometime I'm sure.

Did I mention it's violent?
