Movie Review: Insidious

Synopsis: Josh and Renai have a happy family with their three young children. When tragedy strikes their young son and he goes into a comatose state, they begin to experience things that neither they nor science can explain. Is it the house?

It's not very original and sort of a cross between Poltergeist and Paranormal Activity, but this is a pretty fun ghost story with some spooky scenes and good jump scares. Unfortunately the last act is a bit weak I thought and I didn't like the ending. Still though I thought it was better than most of these haunted house type movies.

The first act of the film is just an old-fashioned haunted house/ghost story with some creepy sounds, ominous shadows and glimpses of images paired with some loud music to make you jump. It works and I think is the best bit of the movie, with some creepy scenes. The second act it becomes more of a possession movie. There are a couple of paranormal investigators sent to help and a medium, we get a seance of course and there's even a priest visit... and speaking of deja vu, if only the medium had been a lot shorter I'd have expected her to demand Carol Anne go to the light to escape the TV. It works with sort of a slow pace and sets up the crazier last third of the movie, where things get a bit goofy and over-the-top at times. It turns into more of a fantasy film almost with another world (the further!) and astral projection taking center stage. Things get silly and I chuckled more often than jumped.

As for the ending, I hated it and felt it was way too open-ended. Sure, they want to set-up a sequel but make it a bit subtle I think and not so in-your-face, which it definitely is.

But when you get past the whole deja vu thing and goofiness towards the end, all wrapped together it's still a pretty fun watch with some good moments.
