Synopsis: A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities. Slowly the spacecraft's shocking, deadly secrets are revealed...and the astronauts find their own survival is more important than they could ever have imagined. As a sci-fi and horror fan both, I enjoyed this. If you're neither you probably won't. It's pretty much a zombie sort of film with really fast moving and violent zombies, it's just set on a space ship. It ends up somewhere between the Alien films and Descent. I think the plot actually tries to outsmart itself a bit and get's sort of muddled but it's still a good script with some original ideas. A bigger monster than the actual monsters is paranoia and psychological isolation, so there's a decent mix of action and suspense.
I like Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster here and they help bring the film up. Mixed martial artist and former Strikeforce Middleweight Champ Cung Le has a pretty cool role, although I wish his part was English speaking, and he gets to kick some butt pretty often. The guy is made for these action roles. For the sexiness factor there's Antje Traue and although it's the first time I've seen her, I'm really hoping it's not the last. She's very believable as a tough chick.
What's not to like? Well like I said, I think the plot does get murky and becomes sort of a mess. It's not really smart enough to make you think much past the surface and it's a bit of wasted potential on that level. I also grew tired of the metal hallways and tunnels that they spend all their time in and never really had a feel for the layout. Some of the action sequences are too fancy for their own good and I really couldn't tell what was happening during some intense scenes.
Despite these things, I don't think the flaws outweighed the big dumb, noisy fun it provided. It's overall pretty competent and intense enough to be memorable I believe, and I might enjoy it more on a 2nd watch.
