Movie Review: 9

Synopsis: A group of sapient rag dolls living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive against several malevolent creatures and learn the secret to their existence.

This movie is really unique in it's visual style, too bad the plot really doesn't go anywhere new. The story just feels really familiar and it's so simplistic compared to how the film looked. Still though, I really liked it just from how director Shane Acker creates such a cool universe of odd robot creature and "burlap people".

The real star of the film is the computer generated animation. It's a dark, creepy world with just a whole lot of neat stuff going on. I thought it looked great and has a lot of really awesome visuals.

The story just doesn't explain enough and creates pretty generic characters, despite how cool they look. Information about what happened to the world and the world itself is revealed as the movie goes along, I just thought in the end it didn't explain near enough and what was explained was in very simplistic terms and it felt very vague. Most of the characters themselves really had no depth and I never really felt connected to them. Better plot and character development would have added a lot of satisfaction to my viewing.

In summary, it's definitely gorgeously animated and very imaginative, I think it just falls sort of delivering a better story. I was entertained though and recommend watching it if you love animation like I do. I hope this isn't the last we see from Shane Acker as well.
