Movie Review: The Last Exorcism

Synopsis: A charismatic but troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew, but he's not prepared for what seems to be going on at this old country farmhouse and his beliefs are shaken to the core.

Another of the shaky, hand-held type mockumentaries like The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield or Quarantine, but what sets this one apart is the storytelling. I was actually pretty wrapped up on what direction it was going to take and by the end was a bit shocked to see where it actually ended up thanks to some pretty clever misdirection. I think it's the kind of story that after the credits role you can still be discussing and come up with completely separate opinions of what just went down.

It may start a bit slow but actually it's just building tension, something it does pretty well, and it actually is very interesting even in the slow parts as it I tried to decide just which direction it was going with respects to religion and faith. There are plenty of decent scares, but it's never just too in-your-face.

The cast was very competent and believable I thought, especially Ashley Bell as the young girl Nell, who is just fantastic. Movies like this never get the players any awards, but I assure you her performance is worthy.

All-in-all I was really pleased with this creepy, suspenseful, intelligently written and above all very entertaining low-budget chiller.

7.5/10
