Synopsis: Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.
This is one of those films that is pretty make-or-break depending on the lead actor, and I think Sam Rockwell's performance definitely makes it a solid movie. His character is intense and believable, which makes for a pretty tense story. I couldn't help but feel bad for him and his long-distance separation from society, while pulling for him to get through it.
It's pretty engaging as the whole story takes shape, then when it's revealed what's going on it all makes sense and poses some moral questions that kept me thinking well after the credits rolled. Without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it, I can't really get into the plot much more.
It's a sci-fi movie for sure, but it's pretty low key sci-fi. I mean the effects are nice but they don't steal the show, they're just to move the story along and give it a long-distance feel.
Good concept, great performance and clever script make this thought-provoking sci-fi flick a potential classic.
