Movie Review: It's Alive

Synopsis: A baby born to a human couple turns out to be a mutant monster with an appetite to kill when scared.

This remake of the cult classic of the same name is really nothing like the original (which honestly isn't that good of a film itself). It never establishes any mood or suspsense and drags way too often. The whole premise is pretty creepy and if properly executed could either be really good dark humor or even a serious thrill ride. This is just neither.

I've said it many times but these monster films are often only as good as their monster, and this one sucks. They never really give a good look at little murdering poop machine, but the times when they show flashes of him or a distance shot or an action shot the little guy just looks like really bad CGI. The best view they finally give of him he really looks nothing like a sweet little baby and you think somebody would notice when their kid looks like a little devil, and not the cutesy kind.

It was also a bit distracting that they tell us the movie takes place in New Mexico, but it looks nothing like it (it was shot in Bulgaria). Couldn't they have just said it was taking place somewhere that's geographically similar to Bulgaria?

Overall, it's boring and slow with bad effects. There's some gore and a few fun scenes but it never really gets going. For a better recent demon baby movie, try Grace.
