Movie Review: Night of the Demons

Synopsis: A group of young adults go to a huge Halloween party, only to have to face down a group of demons after the party is broken up by the police and they're left in the old house alone.

I'll start by saying I haven't seen the original version of this remake, so I can only judge it without comparisons. It's obvious what's being shot for here is a big, dumb, fun, rock ‘n roll horror flick that doesn’t take itself in any way seriously. On that level, it worked for me just fine.

On the good side, this has a nice pace and does well to build up the tension. I also love horror movies with Halloween themes and this meets that criteria too. There's a lot of eye candy for the horny set with the sexy stars like Diora Baird (30 Days of Night: Dark Days), Shannon Elizabeth (Thirteen Ghosts), Monica Keena and my personal favorite Bobbi Sue Luther (Laid To Rest). They're dressed in the current costume trend for women, revealing outfits (anybody remember when Halloween meant dressing as something scary, not just a slut suit?), so there's lot of jiggling and bouncing going on of all the ample assets. The soundtrack is loud and full of punk rock, and the use of it is pretty fun with a lot of quick cuts. The effects are sort of old school but passable and at least are not overdone CGI.

So the problems for me? Well, the cast, while sexy, are all in their mid to late 30s playing more of teenage roles really. The film also tries to feel sort of sexy and raunchy but there's not enough of either to be too effective with only a couple of scenes, involving some demon sex and also a lipstick applicator, taking any real chances. It also tries to be a lot funnier than it turns out to be, with very few real laughs. Edward Furlong has a large role and for me, any role by him is too large.

But in the end, if you're looking for a pretty mindless, but fun, rock 'n roll horror film with big breasted, scantily clad women running from demons in a cool old house... you've found your winner. It's the very definition of a trashy b-movie film just meant to entertain for 90 minutes. While no classic, this will be added to my annual Halloween film festival for sure.
