Movie Review: The Haunting

"No-Do" - Spain (original title)

Synopsis: Following the birth of a new child, a woman begins to suffer from postpartum depression and along with her husband the couple move to a new home away from the city. Now she is starting to hear and see things and the large house in which she and her family live alone seems to hide terrible secrets.

A very atmospheric yet also very convoluted haunted house story out of Spain, it's just too predictable and generic really to be very memorable to me. We've got all the usual elements from these films... isolated mansion, mysterious attic, nightmares, slowly revealed secrets from a tragic past of the house, ghost sightings, creepy kids... you know the routine. You've seen it all before.

The special effects are pretty decent though and it does set a very nice atmosphere with a nice creepy location. The use of the "No-Do" short documentary footage, in which they use film footage to advance the plot, is sort of original as well, although I found a bit of it sort of silly. The story gets a bit bogged down but really the pace of the film kept it interesting at least and once I got to the conclusion, albeit extremely predictable, it's pretty satisfying.

All-in-all it's a decent, but messy, haunted house flick that's worth a look for genre fans but probably nothing overly memorable.
